It’s an exciting time to be working in systems and control engineering. Advances in intelligent control – based on computing approaches like neural networks, Bayesian probability, fuzzy logic, machine learning and evolutionary computation – are transforming industrial engineering applications in ways never seen before.
Our Master’s in Systems and Control has been developed in partnership with companies like Jaguar Land Rover, General Electric, TRW, Goodridge and Bytronic Technologies, many of whom we still collaborate with today. Fully accredited by both the Institute of Measurement and Control (InstMC) and the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), it is one of three specialist pathways, all of which feature significant mathematics and computing content and are therefore designed for graduates in engineering or science. It will suit you if you wish to embark on a career as a technical specialist, systems designer or systems integrator, or if you are a practising engineer looking to stay abreast of important advances and developments.
Coventry has a long and prestigious engineering heritage and is ranked as the 3rd best university in the country for ‘Mechanical Engineering’ by the Guardian University Guide 2020. Our faculty is actively involved in research and consultancy with industry, which ensures your taught material is based on state-of-the-art techniques and technologies, and you benefit significantly from the experience gained from these close relationships. A diverse portfolio of projects includes: collaboration with Jaguar Land Rover in low carbon emission and hybrid vehicles, and optimisation and control applied to radiotherapy treatment with the University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust, Coventry, Control for NOx emission reduction with Ricardo UK, power systems monitoring with ABB, mechatronics hardware development with National Instruments.
Why Coventry University?
An award-winning university, we are committed to providing our students with the best possible experience. We continue to invest in both our facilities and our innovative approach to education. Our students benefit from industry-relevant teaching, and resources and support designed to help them succeed. These range from our modern library and computing facilities to dedicated careers advice and our impressive Students’ Union activities.
Course information
Systems control theory lies at the heart of a range of manual, automated and intelligent machines and electronic processes – from opening and closing valves and breakers on machinery to robots which can defuse bombs and explore shipwrecks in place of humans – with technical advances and new applications being made all the time.
This course aims to develop advanced knowledge of the traditional and modern systems and control techniques being used to reduce costs and maximise efficiency, performance and safety. It is underpinned by robust system identification and testing, using mathematical modelling of inputs, outputs and various behaviours.
Course content is guided by the UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence (UK-SPEC), which sets out the competence and commitment required for registration as a Chartered Engineer (CEng).
Within the context of a changing technological environment and the resulting challenges, such as increase reliance on automation in industry, electrification of vehicle and system automation. You’ll learn various ways in which you can control the behaviour of dynamic phenomena and systems in interaction with their environment, developing skills and gaining practical experience in the design, analysis, modelling and testing of control systems.
Career prospects
Our Master’s degrees in Control Engineering and Systems and Control can lead to careers across a wide, range of application areas from positions in automotive, aerospace, process/chemical industries, manufacturing, robotics and automation, finance and banking.
There are also opportunities in research and development across a wide variety of these Industrial and commercial sectors. Some of our graduates are now employed as project engineers, systems and control engineers and systems integrators.
The course also provides opportunities to develop careers in academia or to continue to pursue research degrees at MPhil/PhD level. It is possible to take individual modules on a continuing professional development (CPD) basis initially and then to register for a programme leading to a postgraduate certificate or postgraduate diploma.
As a postgraduate student, you also receive support from our award-winning Faculty careers service, EEC Futures, which won the ‘Best Placement Service in the UK’ award at the National Undergraduate Employability Awards in 2015 and 2016.
Coventry University is committed to preparing you for your future career and giving you a competitive edge in the graduate job market. The University’s Careers and Employability team provide a wide range of support services to help you plan and prepare for your career.
